Derek is a typographer, photographer, and educator. He graduated from Campbell University in Graphic Design and started out working for a Mid-sized architectural firm, designing environmental graphics and producing promotional items and interface design. Black worked to develop interesting spaces in large medical and educational facilities, including award-winning way-finding and environmental design projects. He later founded a full-service design studio serving a variety of clients from local artisans to corporations. In 2006 he was invited to lecture at Ivy Tech (Indiana) in the visual communication program and decided to further pursue teaching. In 2007 Black was the recipient of a SCAD portfolio fellowship and received his M.F.A. in graphic design (2010). Since then he has taught typeface design, typography, and general graphic design educational courses at SCAD (e-learning, Savannah, Hong Kong). He developed several online courses of study including the undergraduate Typeface Design course at SCAD. Between 2013 and 2015 he served as the academic coordinator for the School of Communications (illustration, graphic design, sequential art, and advertising), served as the Associate Dean of Academic Services for SCAD Hong Kong from 2015-2019 and now advancing his typographic research and consultation.
